Agenda items include deliberations on the 2024 Executive Capital Budget, which the Finance Committee can amend before the capital budget goes to Common Council in a few weeks. Here’s a presentation from last week's capital budget hearings with information about what the Mayor’s executive capital budget proposal includes for each City agency. Here’s a list of Finance Committee members’ proposed amendments to the capital budget, which they will discuss in this 9/26 Finance Committee meeting.

Transportation Commission

The Transportation Commission meeting will take place on Wednesday, September 27, 2023 in virtual format at 5:00 PM. Agenda items include approving the scoring system for of the Accessible Taxi Cab grant (this program is a result of former Alder Erik Paulson’s and Alder Charles Myadze’s work during the last Council session) and a public hearing regarding the approval of the Metro Transit Network Redesign Refinements.

Education Committee

The Education Committee meeting will take place on Wednesday, September 27, 2023 in virtual format at 5:30 PM. Agenda items include a discussion of the 2024 budget and potential recommendations and an update on the drivers education initiative.

Housing Strategy Committee

The Housing Strategy Committee meeting will take place on Thursday, September 28, 2023 in virtual format at 5:00 PM. Agenda items include a study of Madison’s affordable housing shortage and other related housing issues, either via a new task force or the existing Housing Strategy Committee (you can use the "version" toggle option on this Legistar page to select 1 or 2 to see each version of the proposal), the approval of the Housing Snap Shot report.

Burke Heights Neighborhood Walk & Talk 9/27

Meet at the Sycamore Park Shelter near Pulley Dr, 5:30pm

The Northeast Area Plan team is hosting a walk and talk event in the Burke Heights neighborhood on Wednesday September 27th at 5:30 pm, starting at the shelter on the south side of Sycamore Park (near Pulley Drive). City staff from various agencies will be present to discuss resident-identified issues seen along the walk. I will also be joining to hear residents’ input and questions. Have something specific you’d like to discuss? Let us know in advance so we can make sure appropriate staff are present that can address that issue. Contact dmcauliffe@cityofmadison.com for more information or to request interpretation services.

WisDOT Hwy 51 Public Information Meeting, 9/27

Madison College Truax room D1630, 5:00pm

Wisconsin DOT is hosting an open house event to present alternatives being considered for several intersections along Hwy 51, including Hwy 30, Lexington/Commercial Ave., East Washington Ave., Anderson Street and others north to the interstate. Some alternatives are significantly different from what is on the ground today. That meeting will be held on September 27 between 5:00pm-7:00pm at Madison College - Truax Building room D1630. More information can be found on the WisDOT Hwy 51 project website.

MPD Building Site with Current and Proposed Camera Locations
MPD East District Station – Camera Relocation Notice

Madison Police Department requests the relocation of a parking lot security camera at the East District station, 809 S. Thompson Drive here in District 3. A generator was recently installed in a location that obstructs a parking lot camera. MPD requests relocation of the obstructed existing camera from the north/east side of the building to the south/east side of the building so that the east/back parking lot and east side entrance to the building can again be viewed with this camera. This camera is not intended for capturing any resident activity and is only intended for building security. In the proposed new location, the camera's direction facing northeast would point at the building's rear parking lot and rear entrance, with wooded areas in the background, and would point away from any residences or streets. Residents who live near the site will receive postcard notice late next week. If you have questions or concerns, you can contact Assistant Chief of Police John Patterson at jpatterson@cityofmadison.com or (608) 266-4076.

Fall Leaf Collection Updates

  • Yard waste collection begins in October. Get your address’s set-out dates for yard waste at www.cityofmadison.com/YardWaste. Yard waste and brush are very different things. If you combine piles of yard waste and brush the crews won’t collect them.
  • Streets is trying out a new way for residents to find their yard waste collection schedules that should be pretty simple. It’s a map-based tool available right here and on the brush, yard waste, and collection schedule webpages. Just click on the “Try Lookup Map” button on those pages. The old way is still available if you prefer, but we’re trying to improve on the consistent problem of people struggling to get their address to work in the form on our page. If that’s been you, please try the lookup map.

However, you might consider keeping your leaves instead of setting them out for collection. Leaves are a fantastic compost buffer material. We bag and keep all of our leaves (and rake some from the gutters) to stir into the compost pile during the following season. If you’re careful not to leave too thick of a layer, your leaves can also be left on your lawn to provide pollinator habitat and then mowed into the turf the next spring. Many resources to get you started on reusing your leaves can be found at www.cityofmadison.com/Composting and free guides can be picked up from your local Madison Public Library branch. I use this UW-Extension resource about home composting.
