Giving Thanks To MG&E

This Thanksgiving, we at the Madison Fire Department wish to say “Thanks!” to Madison Gas & Electric (MGE) for providing housing accommodations to Station 1 personnel during our temporary relocation from 316 W. Dayton Street.

On January 26, 2015, MFD’s Engine 1 and Lake Rescue Team moved into MGE’s Service Annex I— commonly referred to as “The Shed”— at 650 E. Main Street.

The move allowed MFD first responders to remain centrally located and in close proximity to downtown district emergencies.

“We really haven’t seen a dip in response time,” said Chief Steven Davis. “This worked out perfectly.”

A Return To Old Stomping Grounds

This isn’t the first time MGE rolled out the 'Welcome' mat for MFD. In 2002, an engine and ambulance were stationed at the Annex while MGE’s neighbor, Fire Station 3 (1217 Williamson St.), was remodeled.

"MGE's gas and electric personnel often work closely with the Madison Fire Department in our community,” said Craig Fenrick, Senior Vice President of Energy Operations at MGE. "We’re happy to 'answer the call' again for MFD these last ten months and give Engine 1 a convenient location from which to serve downtown."

The remodeled Annex at 650 E. Main St. provided the same accommodations our firefighters are accustomed to at their home fire stations, including work areas for the officers and firefighters, a fitness room, sleeping quarters, and a kitchen and dining area.

As they pack up and say goodbye, crews look forward to making themselves at home in the newly-renovated Fire Station 1 effective November 30.

Ongoing Community Partnership

Surely it won’t be long before MFD and MGE see each other again. Both agencies work together as first responders on a variety of calls throughout the city, including gas leaks or downed power lines.

But in addition to providing heat and electricity for our bustling city, MGE is always ready to give back to the community it serves.

Their willingness to allow our firefighters to return to the Annex is a shining example of their charitable nature and commitment to public safety.

For that, the MFD is immensely grateful.
