Apparatus Engineer Ryan Majcen

Where are you stationed?
I’m a roving Apparatus Engineer on the ‘C’ Shift.

What was your previous assignment?
My previous position and station was Firefighter/EMT at Station 4, ‘’Bucky’s House,’’ since January 2015, and also a satellite member of the HURT (Heavy Urban Rescue Team).

How many years have you served with the MFD?
I’ve been serving the City of Madison with MFD since July 2013.

What are some of the new challenges you've encountered in your new position?
Some of the unique challenges of being a “roving” AE is expanding my knowledge of all our different apparatuses and territories. With fourteen stations across the city, each apparatus at every station has its own “personality,” meaning each apparatus has different characteristics and subtleties.

Being a new AE, I’ve learned to trust the knowledge and training MFD provided me, but I also depend on the crew at whatever station I’m at for the day to fill me in on their rig and territory.

What have been some of the most rewarding experiences of your career up to this point?
Some of the most rewarding experiences so far in my career have been helping with the birth of any new child or performing CPR on an individual and having them recover.

Overall, some of the most rewarding aspects of the job are that no matter the severity or mildness of a call, we are always problem solving to help someone on potentially their worst day.

What do you do when you're not working at MFD?
Whenever I’m not at the firehouse I’m usually watching and spending time my two girls (2 and 4 years old) at home. I’m also big into the outdoors, fishing, snowmobiling, hiking, etc. and anything Packers, Badgers, and Brewers. Also, whenever possible, my wife and I love to travel throughout the U.S. and overseas.
