Madison Water Utility Joins EPA's WaterSense Program

Madison-The Madison Water Utility has teamed with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) WaterSense program to promote water conservation in the City of Madison. Conserving water has many financial and environmental benefits, including reduced energy consumption, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, and reduced stress on our aquifer. The goal of the EPA program is to decrease indoor and outdoor water use through high-efficiency products and simple water-saving practices. The program helps customers identify water efficient products in the marketplace that have been independently certified for efficiency and performance, and it promotes water-saving techniques that reduce stress on water systems and the environment. Using water more efficiently can help delay the need to develop additional wells, saving the city money and resources, as well as ensuring that high-quality water will be available for the future. According to the EPA, fully adopting water-efficient products and practices can save the average household approximately 30,000 gallons of water per year. "The Madison Water Utility is proud to be a WaterSense partner," said General Manager Tom Heikkinen. "We look forward to working with our customers to improve awareness and promote water-saving products and practices in and around the home." WaterSense-labeled products, which include high-efficiency toilets, meet the EPA's criteria for efficiency and performance.
