Firefighters Extricate Biker Following Traffic Crash

posted

City of Madison firefighters and paramedics responded to the scene of a crash involving a biker and a passenger car this evening. Crews were dispatched at 5:00 p.m. to the intersection of Aberg Ave. and Huxley. They arrived to find the biker pinned beneath the vehicle. Crews from Ladder 8, Engine 10, and Engine 3 extricated the victim using inflatable bags to lift the weight of the car. The Department recently completed updated training in the use of the bags for extrication and completed the job within minutes. Med Flight was called to the scene for transport of the patient. Engine Company 3 coordinated the landing. Madison paramedics attended to the patient until Med Flight's arrival. Among the tools MFD medics are now using for trauma patients is a video laryngoscope. This is a new device that can facilitate a more accurate intubation without soft tissue manipulation. The patient was transported via Med Flight to UW Hospital, a Level 1 Trauma Center.
