A Decade of Safety Town Means Safer Children & Teens

Fire Chief & Mayor To Attend Graduation

Safety Town's first "residents" from 2004 are now in high school. Tomorrow, new Safety Town graduates will celebrate completion of the program. City of Madison Mayor Paul Soglin will join Fire Chief Steve Davis to wish them well. The graduation ceremony will begin at 11:00 a.m. Friday morning at Light House Christian School, 5202 Regent St. This year, 140 pre-kindergartners have completed their Safety Town studies. Safety Town is a one-week program, designed especially for children entering kindergarten in the fall, which teaches children how to be safe in their community. Safety Town uses hands-on activities - taught in a small-scale city with streets, homes and sidewalks - to teach children about many different aspects of safety and injury prevention. The curriculum is derived from Center for Disease Control (CDC) data related to the highest injury risks for young children. Other topics include: ? Poison prevention education ? Handwashing ? Fire safety ? Playground, school bus and traffic safety ? Bike safety ? Electrical safety ? Motor vehicle protection ? Choking prevention Safety Town is a collaborative initiative coordinated by Madison Area Safe Kids, the City of Madison Fire Department and the City of Madison Police Department in partnership with numerous local agencies focused on the safety of children and families.
