Oscar Rennebohm Foundation Awards $50,000 to Two City Splash Park Projects
Madison, WI—The Madison Parks Foundation is pleased to announce a $50,000 grant from the Oscar Rennebohm Foundation, Inc., for the construction of splash parks at Reindahl Park on the east side of Madison and the west side’s Elver Park.
“The Madison Parks Foundation is thrilled by the generosity of the Oscar Rennebohm Foundation, which continues to leave a legacy of philanthropy throughout Madison,” says Stephanie Franklin, Executive Director of the Madison Parks Foundation. “As longtime community stewards, they identify with the need to provide safe, healthy and fun opportunities for kids and families across the city.”
The splash parks at both locations will feature modern and eco-friendly interactive water attractions with spray toys and fountains for children of all ages.
“Madison Parks is excited to offer kids and families more ways to enjoy Madison parks in the summer,” says Kevin Briski, City of Madison Parks Superintendent. “Splash parks are a wonderful complement to our public beaches and Goodman Pool.”
More than 15,000 park-goers will enjoy the new recreational facilities, set to open in August 2014 with construction beginning in late spring. The City of Madison has committed eighty-five percent of the funding for the $2,000,000 project. In addition to the Rennebohm donation, the Madison Parks Foundation was awarded $50,000 from the Evjue Foundation, $10,000 from American Family Insurance and the Madison Community Foundation has also committed $50,000 to the project.
The Oscar Rennebohm Foundation was established in 1949 by Oscar Rennebohm, founder of the Rennebohm Drug Store chain in Madison. Rennebohm was a successful businessman and generous philanthropist, who also served as Wisconsin governor and as the president of the UW-Madison Board of Regents. The Oscar Rennebohm Foundation funds projects in the Madison area with emphasis on four areas: education and research, the disadvantaged, health services and the community.
Located at 1818 Portage Road on the far-east side, just off East Washington Avenue, Reindahl Park is home to a major soccer complex, reservable shelter, playground, basketball court, community gardens and tennis courts. The splash park is among several new improvements planned by the City of Madison, including athletic facility enhancements and new shelter landscaping.
Elver Park is one of Madison’s crown-jewel parks and the largest in the city. Located on the southwest side at 1250 McKenna Boulevard, Elver is easily accessible for area neighborhoods as well as visitors who flock there to enjoy the playground, softball and soccer fields, and disc golf course in the summer, and the sledding hill, lighted cross-country ski trail and ice rinks in winter.
