Quick Response Keeps Fire Outside of Home

A quick response by City of Madison Firefighters stopped an exterior fire from burning into a home and causing interior damage late Monday afternoon.  When fire crews arrived at 1317 East Mifflin Street they discovered a fire on the home’s exterior wall, burning from the second floor up towards the roofline.
 
Fire crews were dispatched at 5:04 p.m. and Engine 3 arrived within five minutes.  Firefighters quickly pulled a hoseline to the rear of the two-story, two-flat apartment building and knocked down the flames on the outside wall.  Other firefighters went to the second floor with a hose to extinguish any fire inside the home.  They found no fire or smoke inside the building.
 
Additional firefighters arrived quickly and searched the building to make sure everyone was safely outside.  A crew also laddered the roof and checked to make sure the fire did not extend into the attic and roof.
 
The fire caused approximately $10,000 damage to the house.  The cause of the fire is under investigation.  No injuries were reported at the scene.
 
Madison Police officers who responded to the fire checked on the children and staff at a daycare next door to the fire.  As a precaution, they advised the staff to keep the doors and windows closed and move everyone to the opposite end of the building away from the fire.  The flames and smoke were far enough away and posed no threat to the daycare building, children or staff.
 
  
Please remember that smoke alarms save lives.  Almost two-thirds of home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.  When there is a fire, smoke spreads fast and you need smoke alarms to give you time to get out.
 
Make sure your home is safe for you and your family by following these safety tips:

 

• Install smoke alarms on every level of the home, in each bedroom, and outside each bedroom.
• Test your smoke alarms every month.
• Make an escape plan and have a fire drill to practice your plan.
• When the alarm sounds, get out and stay out.
• After you have escaped, call 9-1-1 from a safe place.
