It’s now safe for Madison Water Utility customers to stop running water

posted

Madison, WI – April 14, 2014 Hundreds of customers across Madison can finally shut off their water now that the frost line below ground has receded. Since early February, Madison Water Utility has directed more than 650 customers in high risk areas to run a constant stream of water to help keep their service laterals from freezing. During this winter’s prolonged extreme cold, utility crews thawed some 300 frozen service laterals (the pipe running from a water main to a home). In a typical winter, we thaw just a handful.

Bill credits for water used

Customers who were directed by Madison Water Utility to run their water will receive a credit on their next bill for the excess water used and extra sewer charges. We will calculate a customer’s average water use from the same period over the last three years (2011, 2012 and 2013) and then credit the account for any water used in 2014 that was above that average. Credits will be issued beginning with the next bill and may extend over more than one billing cycle.

Only customers who were directly notified by Madison Water Utility to run water will receive a credit.
