Crashed Truck Burns, Driver Escapes Safely

A City of Madison water tank truck rolled over and caught on fire on the westbound beltline this morning.  The driver, who was helped out of the truck by a passing motorist, was transported to UW Hospital to be evaluated for possible injuries.
 
Firefighters were called to the crash scene at 10:43 am.  Engine 9 and Ladder 6, approaching from opposite directions, used foam to extinguish the fire that heavily damaged the truck’s front end.  Once the fire was extinguished, crews focused on stopping diesel fuel and hydraulic fluid that were leaking onto the ground.
 
The Madison Fire Department Hazardous Incident Team (HIT) responded to the scene and used a small holding tank to catch fuel that was leaking from the truck’s fuel tank.  Diking and damming materials were used to prevent runoff water from the firefighting hoselines from entering a nearby storm drain.
 
Approximately ten gallons of fuel leaked from the tank before it was safe to begin containing it.  A City of Madison vacuum truck was brought to the scene to remove runoff water and fuel that entered the storm sewer prior to the containment operation.
