Roofs Torn From Homes on West Side

posted

Shortly after midnight, 911 Communications received calls from multiple residents on Friar Lane, reporting their roof was just torn from their home. City of Madison Fire Department crews were dispatched to the area, where numerous homes were destroyed or heavily damaged. Six of the homes had their roofs ripped from their home and suffered partial collapse to walls. Trees were strewn throughout the neighborhood, some branches punched through windows and roofs.  A wall of trees also blocked Friar Lane.

City of Madison Fire Crews went door-to-door to around 23 homes in the neighborhood; to be sure everyone was accounted for. Firefighters told the residents to stay inside their homes until the area was assessed further. Downed wires, debris and trees were scattered throughout the area.

No injuries were reported.

City of Madison Fire Department personnel encouraged the residents to stay with friends, relatives or have Red Cross assist them with housing, but most of the residents decided to stay in their homes.

MG&E cut gas and electric to the area.

Red Cross assisted two families with housing and other emergency needs.

Madison Metro also assisted at the scene to help keep residents warm and dry.
