Community Educators and Firefighters Remind Kids, "Hear the Beep Where You Sleep"

In the spirit of Fire Prevention Week, which wrapped up last Saturday, the Madison Fire Department continues to make its way through area elementary schools to meet the high demand for fire safety education.

By October’s end, MFD Community Educators and Firefighters will visit all elementary schools, including parochial schools, in the city of Madison and the village of Shorewood. An estimated 7,000 students in grades K-3 will learn important safety tips and practical advice for preventing fire-related incidents and injury.

This year, the National Fire Protection Agency stresses the importance of installing working smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of the home, including the basement. “Hear the Beep Where You Sleep” is the catchphrase taught as children also practice identifying outdoor meeting places and performing safe evacuations in the event of a fire.

The annual MFD Fire Safety School Tour provides direct outreach to area children, equipping them with the knowledge and decision-making skills necessary to greatly reduce the chances of fire-related injury or death.
