Water from West Side well competes for state’s Best Tasting Water

Competition tomorrow morning at Monona Terrace

Madison Water Utility will enter water from a municipal well just off the Beltline in its bid to win best-tasting water in the state. Well 12 on Whitney Way (pictured below) pumps more than 500 million gallons of water a year to people living north of the Beltline from Glenway St. to Whitney Way and south of the Beltline from Seminole Hwy. to Gammon Road.

Water from well 12 won the state Best Tasting Water Competition in 2013 and took 3rd place in 2014. The 1950s-era facility is scheduled to be rebuilt in the next few years as part of a $2.8 million project. The planned facility overhaul will give the well greater operational flexibility, allowing it to supply water to Madison’s far-west side if needed. Water mains in the area will also be upgraded ahead of the project.

Four sample jars were filled at the well this afternoon and will be taken to Monona Terrace, where the Best Tasting Water competition kicks off tomorrow morning at 10:00 a.m., with final round judging happening around 11. A panel of judges will carefully taste tap water samples brought to Madison from municipalities around the state. The competition is in its 31st year and is part of the Wisconsin Section of the American Water Works Association (WIAWWA) Annual Conference and Expo being held this week at Monona Terrace.
