Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway Statement on Anti-Transgender Bills in the Legislature

The bills announced by Wisconsin Republican legislators that seek to prevent transgender student athletes from participating in sports are saddening.
We are barely out of the COVID-19 pandemic that has had a tremendous physical and mental health impact on all of us, particularly our youth. At such a critical point, when we are working towards recovery and rebuilding an equitable society for all, theses bills send the very opposite message. We have significant issues that need our attention, resources and energy; working to reverse decades of progress for our LGBTQI+ community is not the way to go.
To trans youth in Madison, I want to be clear: this community sees you, supports you, and loves you. It is my hope that the authors of these bills will withdraw them, or failing that, that they will be roundly rejected by the state legislature.
