Bill Sullivan Named Madison Fire Marshal

posted

The Madison Fire Department is pleased to announce Bill Sullivan has been appointed to the position of Fire Marshal for the City of Madison. Sullivan assumed the duties on March 6, 2023.

Sullivan’s interest in the fire service began at a young age and led him to attend Eastern Kentucky University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Fire and Safety Engineering Technology. Prior to joining the Madison Fire Department in 2007, Sullivan was a fire protection project engineer specializing in fire suppression systems for a multi-discipline engineering firm. He has served as the Madison Fire Department's Fire Protection Engineer for the past 16 years.

Drawing from his additional experience as a firefighter with the Sun Prairie Fire Department, Sullivan brings unique knowledge and perspective from both a fire prevention and an emergency response standpoint. He applies this experience to work with designers and developers to make buildings safer for both occupants and first responders.

As Fire Marshal, Sullivan oversees the MFD Fire Prevention Division, which is responsible for fire and elevator code enforcement, community education, and new construction plan review. Among his top goals in the position will be community risk reduction, which will involve a comprehensive community risk analysis to determine specific needs and outreach opportunities within the fire department's response territories. The effort will examine community risk factors such fire hazards, emergency preparedness, socio-economic factors, and emergency response data trends. Additionally, he looks forward to continuing to educate consumers about the benefits of home fire sprinklers and how to make home fire protection systems a cost-effective option when designing or retrofitting a new home.

In the months ahead, Sullivan will welcome an additional Fire Protection Engineer and a City Emergency Management Coordinator to the MFD Fire Prevention Division.

Sullivan is grateful for the opportunity to serve as Fire Marshal for the City of Madison, and to be a part of a strong, prevention-oriented team that works to support the mission of the Madison Fire Department. Outside the fire department, he enjoys spending time with his wife, three kids, and two dogs, and doing most anything outside.
