Madison's First Cardboard Arcade

One year ago the internet film Caine's Arcade, the story of a young boys hand-crafted cardboard arcade went viral with over 7 million views in under 5 months. The film has inspired volunteers and organizations around the world to host and promote their own Global Cardboard Challenge events in over 25 countries. Thursday, Madison will get its first cardboard arcade with the help of the students of Sherman Middle School's Sherman Arcade Extravaganza. Over 100 6th graders at Sherman have spent the last few months collecting used cardboard, string, tape, and a host of other items. They've gathered in groups and have assembled them into a giant cardboard arcade to share with their friends and families from 5:30 to 7:30 on Thursday in the Sherman Gymnasium. "I've received video from parents showing the amazing things their kids have built at home, literally taking over their living rooms" said Principal Michael Hernandez, "The ingenuity our kids have displayed is an inspiration to all of us". The Sherman program is based on the Cardboard Challenge program created by the Imagination Foundation. However Sherman's teachers took it further incorporating core teaching standards covering math, social studies, science and language arts. The funding for the extravaganza was provided by local businesses wuntusk and iona. wuntusk's founder Monty Schmidt who also founded Sonic Foundry has been a long time tutor at Sherman. Working with local makerspace Sector 67 and its founder Chris Myer they teach a weekly science class to Sherman kids covering topics like 3d Printing and Modeling, electronics and programming. "This is hopefully the first of many years of extravaganza's here at Sherman and if we're really lucky we'll see it in other Madison schools as well", said Schmidt For more information on the Sherman Arcade Extravaganza: Principal Michael Hernandez : mhernandez3@madison.k12.wi.us For more information about Caine's Arcade, Global Cardboard Challenge and Imagination Foundation: http://www.cainesarcade.com
