Black Revolutionaries in the Early American Republic, 1787 - 1830
During the aftermath of the American Revolution, Black Americans pursued freedom and citizenship in the newly formed democratic republic. In the region that would become the state of Wisconsin race-based slavery was contested, and Black citizenship was debated in the state-making process. The assertions and experiences of Black Americans in this region helped shape understandings of race, belonging, and citizenship. Presented by Professor Christy Clark-Pujara.
