United We Stand Event Sunday January 29

You are invited to join the city-wide gathering to support our community's immigrant residents in the face of potential changes by the new Federal administration. The event will be held tomorrow, Sunday, January 29, 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm at the Monona Terrace.

Topics include:

  • Immigrant Rights
  • Understanding Islamophobia
  • United Against Hate – Building an Inclusive Community
  • How Can We Help Each Other?

Speakers include Mayor Soglin, representatives of the Latino and Muslim civil rights organizations, the ACLU and faith leaders. The afternoon meeting will be moderated by Rev. Everett Mitchell, Dane County Judge and Pastor of Christ the Solid Rock Church.

United We Stand, organized by a committee of community leaders, Madison Common Council members, led by Ald. Samba Baldeh, and Jewish, Christian and Muslim faith leaders, will provide information on the legal rights of immigrants, the perspectives of local, state and national elected officials and how we can help each other in the difficult times ahead.

Doors open at 1:30. The event is free and childcare and light refreshments will be provided.

Northside Schools Q&A

You are invited to a Northside Community Forum about Madison Public School on Thursday February 16 at 6:00pm at Sherman Middle School.

A few months ago, I hosted the leaders of District 12 Neighborhood Associations. One of the topics that was discussed was connecting more with our neighborhood schools, the state of Northside schools and how we can promote achievement for our children.

State Representative Melissa Sargent and I have been meeting with School Superintendent Cheatham to discuss your interests and concerns and this has led to this opportunity to hear from her and school staff about our community schools, what they have been working on and how we can partner together around education.

The evening will start with Superintendent Cheatham providing a "State of the Northside School" report and then be opened for questions from the audience.

I hope that you are able to attend and find out more about our Northside schools.

Madison Residents Asked to Open Storm Sewer Inlets

Many of the storm sewer inlets on city streets are blocked with snow and ice.  The City of Madison Engineering Division has been hard at work clearing these inlets, but there are so many in the city, their staff would not be able to clear them all.  Therefore, if residents are able help clean out storm sewer inlets, especially in low lying areas and intersections, it will help prevent the rain and snow melt from ponding around these blocked inlets.

As we are still only in January, the likelihood of below freezing temperatures returning is fairly high.  These areas of standing water would then freeze when temperatures drop, which could create hazards for walkers and all roadway users.  If residents can safely clear the inlets near their home, this assistance would be greatly appreciated.

If you have any questions regarding clearing the inlet near your home, please contact the Engineering Department at 608-266-4430.
