1. RACIAL EQUITY & POLICING

Police and Fire Commission Chooses Shon Barnes as New Police Chief
On Friday Dec. 18, the Police and Fire Commission announced their selection of Dr. Shon F. Barnes to be the next Chief of Police. As is standard practice, the PFC will issue a Conditional Offer of Appointment. The PFC has statutory authority to hire and fire the Chief of Police per Wis Statutes 62.13 (3). It also includes links to the candidates' Q&A sessions with the PFC and to PFC meetings at which public input was taken.

Public Health has launched a new COVID-19 vaccine webpage that outlines the authorization process and prioritization as rollout of vaccines begins. The first vaccine has been authorized for use, and some front line healthcare workers in Dane County received vaccinations this week.
Even though a COVID-19 vaccine is approved, there will not be enough doses right away to vaccinate everyone. Stay tuned to the COVID-19 vaccine webpage and sign up for blog updates to stay informed on availability. Take a look at the latest update and subscribe here.

Where to Get Info on Winter Streets, Parking, Plowing, and Snow
When should sidewalks be cleared? Are snowplows out? Is there a Declared Snow Emergency? Where can I park during a Snow Emergency? The City of Madison winter website has a plethora of useful winter information on these subjects and more. You can learn the locations of where to get free sand for your sidewalks and driveways. You can learn about winter recreation opportunities like ice skating and snowshoeing. And you can learn about the proper way to spread salt to help minimize the effect it has on our environment and drinking water. The City's winter website is www.cityofmadison.com/winter.
MMSD Family Survey and Student Survey on Reopening - Dec. 20 Deadline
Madison Metropolitan School District has a parent survey and a student survey to gather input on the rest of school year plans. Both surveys can be found at the Reopening Plan website. The deadline for completing either is Dec, 20.
Core Spaces Submits New Proposal for 126 Langdon St.
This past week Cores Spaces submitted a new application to the city for their Hub II development proposal planned for the empty lot at 126 Langdon Street, the former location of a now-demolished private dormitory, The Langdon. In July, an earlier proposal by Core Spaces that sought several required Conditional Use Permits was denied by Plan Commission on a 7-1 vote. The new version will seek the same Conditional Uses.
The new proposal is similar to the previous version, but the number of bedrooms has been reduced from 376 to 353; an additional two onsite parking stalls for delivery vehicles have been included; the front massing and facade have been redesigned with larger inset areas, and several other minor changes were made. It is anticipated that after a neighborhood meeting and consideration by a yet-to-form Campus Area Neighborhood Association (CANA) steering committee, the proposal will go before Plan Commission as soon as February. Members of the Mansion Hill Neighborhood steering committee that considered the earlier proposal are expected to be invited to participate in the process given that they led the earlier evaluation prior to CANA's formation.
