• Angela Trudell Vasquez Reappointed Madison Poet Laureate

• From Parks: Winter Fun: Events This Weekend

• On Tuesday, Jan. 25, join in community for an evening with Nikole Hannah-Jones, Pulitzer Prize-winning creator of The 1619 Project, staff writer at The New York Times Magazine, and co-founder of the Ida B. Wells Society for Investigative Reporting. Hannah-Jones will reflect on the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., through the lens of her award-winning work investigating racial injustice and the consequences of slavery in American history. • Madison's Landmarks Ordinance Review Committee (LORC) has proposed revisions to Madison's Historic Preservation Ordinance for local historic districts. These ordinance changes will apply to all properties in the Mansion Hill, Third Lake Ridge, Marquette Bungalows, University Heights, and First Settlement local historic districts. Three public meetings have been scheduled to provide an overview of the proposed changes and an opportunity to comment on the draft ordinance. Read the press release here. • The Dane County Land and Water Resources Dept. has a limited supply of free native plants that are available for use in school or community projects within Dane County that benefit water quality and education. Plants for the fall cycle are grown by volunteers. Plants will be available for pick up in late summer. To find out more about the program please visit the program website.

• The dogs who protect and patrol the Madison community are in need of your help. The Madison Police Department K-9 unit is launching a fundraiser for new bulletproof vests for its six patrol dogs. Learn more and find out how to donate here.

• The City of Madison is seeking to fund proposals in 2022 that support community partners in their work delivering direct assistance to undocumented individuals and families as they cope with the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. Applications are due by 12:00 noon on Jan. 28, 2022. Learn more here.

• Remember that the deadline to contact staff for the 2022 Neighborhood Grant Program pre-app meeting has been extended to Jan. 31, 2022. Do not miss this opportunity and meet with us to discuss ideas! Final deadline to apply for a grant is Feb. 7, 2022, 4:30pm.

• Madison Arts Commission annual grants of up to $3,000 to support art projects and a new special grant program called "Artists at Work" in the amount of $15,000 - $29,000 to support job creation for the creative sector will soon be open. Stay tuned! Opportunities will come to this webpage in February.

• The Streets Division has several ways for you to stay informed about winter:

Jan. 31 Neighborhood Meeting - New Redevelopment Proposal on State Street

Please join me for a virtual neighborhood meeting on Jan. 31 at 6:30pm for a first look at a proposed redevelopment on State Street. JD McCormick Properties proposes to demolish the three buildings at 428 through 444 State Street and construct a new a five-story, mixed-use building with 22 to 26 dwelling units and first floor commercial spaces. The developer will be seeking a Demolition Permit and will need approvals by the Urban Design Commission and Plan Commission, but formal applications have not yet been filed with the city.

The Mansion Hill District of Capitol Neighborhoods, Inc., (CNI), will form a steering committee after the Jan. 31 meeting, but I encourage you to attend this first meeting to learn more about the proposed redevelopment. The neighborhood steering committee will also provide opportunities to provide input on the proposal with the help of neighbors and the development team as they begin the city approval process.

You can join the virtual meeting using your computer, smartphone or tablet, or you can listen in via telephone. You will receive login information after registering here. Note that due to redistricting that took effect on January 1, this location is now in District 2 that I represent.

Downtown Neighborhood Associations Adopt Affordable Housing Resolution

Four recognized neighborhood associations that represent the downtown core of Madison have adopted a resolution that calls for the creation of affordable housing in their neighborhoods. 

Capitol Neighborhoods, Marquette Neighborhood Association, Campus Area Neighborhood Association, and Tenney-Lapham Neighborhood Association have jointly, unanimously adopted the resolution which calls for the creation of additional affordable housing. According to CNI Executive Council member and former CNI Presient, Eli Judge, who spearheaded the inter-neighborhood effort, the major highlights of the resolution are:

• Establishing a joint definition of "affordable." A unit will be considered affordable by our neighborhoods if a tenant's monthly rent would constitute 30% of the monthly income of an individual making 30% of the area median income of Dane County.

• Advocating for a certain percentage of affordable units in residential projects. The neighborhoods will request that at least 15% of units in all new proposed residential projects be affordable by the resolution's standards. 

• Joint advocacy for all signatory neighborhoods. Each neighborhood is committed to advocate for these standards for every future residential project that they are providing input on in the public approval and developer feedback process. 

According to Judge, as noted in the resolution, our neighborhoods understand that providing joint guidance regarding requests for affordable units will help remove uncertainty and delay in the development process. We also highlight that entirely unchecked development, while potentially beneficial toward increasing the total number of housing units downtown, has not led to a proportional increase in affordable units in our areas. Our neighbors that rely on these units are simply being priced out of our neighborhoods to the detriment of the vitality, enjoyability, and desirability of our city's critical downtown.

Radium and manganese have periodically exceeded Federal primary and secondary Maximum Contaminant Levels in Well 19 which serves portions of District 2 west of approximately Carroll Street (see map in the presentation). Currently, Well 19 is used at only 30% of its capacity to avoid the contaminant problems.
