East Madison Water Supply Planning Group To Hold Public Sessions to Share Ideas

As part of a public engagement project begun last summer, the Madison Water Utility and citizens involved in an advisory panel are inviting the public to two "listening and learning" open house sessions June 27 and 30. The events are designed to allow interested people an opportunity to review and offer their thoughts about proposals the advisory group has developed to insure a reliable supply of safe drinking water on Madison's east side over the next 20 years. Displays and discussions will center around water quality issues, projected demand, costs, and conservation measures. The two identical open house-type sessions will be on Monday, June 27, at East High School, 2222 East Washington Avenue, 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and on Thursday, June 30, at the Warner Park Community Recreation Center, 1625 Northport Drive, also from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Question and answer sessions will be held at 4:45 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Attendees are welcome to drop in any time. The citizens group will provide child care at the Warner Park location. The purpose of the 18-month study is to develop projects to improve water quality and supply in an area ranging from the Yahara River on the west to I-90 on the east, to Northport Drive and East Towne on the north to Buckeye Road on the south. Using a $291,000 special appropriations grant procured by Representative Tammy Baldwin's office through the USEPA and $359,000 in Water Utility matching funds, the project will assess water demands, supply requirements, water quality, and distribution system capacity. The ultimate goal of the study will be to develop a capital improvement program to meet long term needs.
