Spring 2023 Elections for District 2 & District 6

posted

As mentioned in my Oct. 12 Alder Update, the city's redistricting effort that took place as a result of the 2020 US Census included a shift in the area covered by District 2 that I represent and a shift in District 6 in which I live. Since the redistricting shifts took effect on Jan. 1, 2022, I have resided in District 6, but legally am able to represent District 2, the district in which I was elected, up until the 2023 Spring Election.

Winning candidates in the 2023 Spring Election will need to live in the district they would represent by the time they are seated on April 18, 2023. I reiterate that I do not plan to move to District 2, so I will not be running for re-election in District 2.

As for District 6 (generally the Tenney-Lapham and Marquette Neighborhoods) in which I could run for election, I have also decided that I will not be running for District 6 Alder in the spring of 2023. Note that of this writing, no other current alders live in the "new" District 6.

I encourage anyone interested in representing D2 or D6 to reach out (district2@cityofmadison.com). I'm more than happy to give you an idea of what being an alder entails whether you are considering the Spring 2023 election or in the future.

The City Clerk's Office provides great information, resources, and a calendar of important dates for those considering running in the Spring 2023 Elections.

While being an alder can be a big job, it is also very satisfying. I not only have enjoyed the privilege of representing my constituents, but I have also found great satisfaction working with city staff, other alders, the mayor's office, and many stakeholders as we move Madison forward.

I will be District 2 Alder until April 18, 2023, so I am not going away yet. My plans for the coming months include continuing to provide constituents with information, connections to city resources, and help when they need it. I also will continue advancing policy-related issues, including

  • increasing housing supply and options for residents of all income levels;

  • moving forward with Transit Oriented Development;

  • empowering residents and neighborhoods that have traditionally been unempowered;

  • supporting progressive transportation solutions such as Bus Rapid Transit, Metro's Network Redesign, and Transportation Demand Managment;

  • moving forward with efforts to increase the energy efficiency of our public and private infrastructure;

  • working with Council Leadership to ensure that Common Council is efficient, fair, and accessible, and

  • promoting responsible city budgeting.

I hope that prospective 2023 candidates for both D2 and D6 will support many of these same efforts while at the same time bring new perspectives.
