Hello All!

 

As part of our ongoing efforts to be informative and share information, I will provide some monthly crime data on my blog. 

 

MPD's dedicated Crime Analysts create this product.  We use it to help to identify trends within and across districts, and to help focus resources on 'hot spots'.

 

Below are excerpts from the DECEMBER 2018 report:

 

Shots Fired:

In December of 2018, there were 5 shots-fired central

 

For the month of December there were 14 incidents city-wide

 

Year to date for the City there have been 186 shots fired--a 15.5%  DECREASE over last year

 

Year to date 31 individuals have been struck by gunfire (not including accidents (5 year to date) and self-inflicted (11 in 2018)). 

 

 

Robberies:

There were 23 robberies city-wide in December (compared to 24 in December of 2017); Central District had 5 robberies in December of 2018

 

The five year city-wide average for December robberies is 22.4

 

46% of robberies took place between 8p-3am and Wednesdays and Mondays are the most prolific days for robberies

 

 

Burglaries:

There were 1067 reported burglaries in Madison in 2018; there were 919 in 2017 (16% INCREASE)

 

City-wide there were 47 burglaries in December compared to 89 burglaries in December of 2017, a 47% DECREASE

 

There were 8 burglaries central in December of 2018

***at least 21 of burglaries involved an unlocked door or open garage***

Heroin Overdoses:

 

Overdoses attributed to opiates continue to be a major problem in Madison (and throughout the nation).  The lethality of these drugs--thanks to incredibly potent synthetics--continues to increase.  

 

In December of 2018, Central had 1 overdoses; in December of 2017 there were 8

 

CITY WIDE: In the month of December 2018, there were 10 known overdoses. In December of 2017 there were 33 OD's city-wide. 

 

There have been 275 overdoses so far in 2018, compared to 259 in the first nine months of 2017. This is a 6% INCREASE.

 

FATALITIES: In December of 2018 there were 2 suspected death from heroin--compared with 5 opioid related fatalities in December of 2017.  Year to date there have been 42 suspected heroin related deaths in Madison.

 

MARI: Patrol referred 2 people to the MARI program in December.  24 people have now completed the MARI program.

 

MARI is the Madison Area Recovery Initiative, a program that MPD launched and for which MPD secured the grant funding.  MPD works in partnership with a host of other agencies and stakeholders to use this alternative to traditional arrest.

Stranger Sexual Assaults (includes 1st, 2nd, and 4th degree):

City-wide, there were 0 assaults in December (there were 1 in December of 2017)

 

Year to date there have been 45 stranger assaults city-wide, compared to 36 at this time in 2017, an INCREASE OF 25%
