2016: Harnessing the Power of Ethics

This multi-disciplinary workshop featuring social worker and law enforcement ethics, among others, will help participants use ethics to improve professional behavior and also avoid inadvertent ethics violations.

The highly interactive workshop uses real scenarios to drive discussions of whether violations occurred and which codes should or should not be applied. Because the "gray areas" cause the most difficulty in determining ethics complaints, the workshop's real-life examples of debatable allegations will drive learning as participants delve into codes of ethics to decide whether violations occurred. By examining both their own professional codes and several from different professions, the participants will deepen their understanding of what ethics really are and how to use them to shape behavior.

During the entire workshop, participants will conduct "ethics mapping" on a flip chart to reveal many of the fundamental ethics/values that underlie all professional codes of ethics (and human behavior). This will strengthen the participants' ability to comprehend the source and power of practical ethics, and how to use that knowledge in improving and maintaining ethical behavior.

To make the workshop practical, participants will be asked after each scenario two questions. "What could my organization have done to prevent this ethics problem? What could I have done to prevent this ethics problem?" That will lead to realistic actions professionals might pursue when they return to their duties.

Participants will be challenged to identify and plan methods to "renew" ethics awareness and practices in their professions and among their immediate co-workers back on the job Moreover, participants will be further challenged to identify how to improve their codes of ethics.
