Black Revolutionaries in the Early American Republic, 1787 - 1830
Event Description
During the aftermath of the American Revolution,
Black Americans pursued freedom and citizenship
in the newly formed democratic republic. The
fight for liberty extended into the Northwest
Territory, including the region that would become
the state of Wisconsin, where race-based slavery
was contested, and Black citizenship was debated
in the state-making process. The assertions and
experiences of Black Americans in this region
helped shape local and national understandings of
race, belonging, and citizenship in the burgeoning
American republic. Presented by Professor Christy
Clark-Pujara, Chair of UW-Madison's Department
of African American studies.
