Speed Reduction on Mineral Point and Other Highlights for the Week of August 29, 2022

Starting today (8/29), the next 2022 roadway improvement scheduled through the Vision Zero initiative takes place to a section of Mineral Point Rd, from S Whitney Way to the Beltline. This key roadway is home to commercial retail, including West Towne mall, schools and is a key road leading to the beltline. This speed reduction from 40 mph to 35 mph should not affect travel times on this stretch of roadway.

There are future plans in 2023 and 2024 for improvements along this stretch of Mineral Point Rd, including a shared use path which will increase the protection for those traveling not in a vehicle. These improvements will ensure a safer travel for pedestrians and bicyclists along Mineral Point Rd, but also provide vehicles with a buffer from those most vulnerable. City Traffic Engineering also applied for, and received, a federal grant to make safety improvements at the Mineral Point Rd and High Point Rd intersection.

• Additional streets scheduled for speed limit reductions in 2022 include:
  • Old Sauk Road, from the Beltline to Westfield Road (reduced to 30 mph from 35 mph)
  • Portage Road, from E. Washington Avenue to Hanson Road (reduced to 25 mph from 30 mph) Segoe Road, from University Avenue to Odana Road (reduced to 25 mph from 30 mph)

• In partnership with the Madison Metropolitan School District's Office of School Safety, Public Health Madison & Dane County's Violence Prevention Unit is hosting a virtual session on school safety on Wednesday, August 31, 5pm - 6pm. The virtual session is free but registration is required. The session will be recorded and made available on PHMDC's Violence Prevention Unit's webpage. This is the third installment in the "Violence Prevention & Intervention Speaker Series". It is open to everyone in the community.

• From Madison Metro: Labor Day Changes

  • Reduced Service on Monday, 9/5 - Labor Day. Metro will run HOLIDAY schedules on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 5 on many routes. More info here.

  • Route 80 operates a shortened weekend recess schedule, final scheduled trip departs Memorial Union at 9:15p. Routes 81-84 will not operate. 

  • ParaTransit Standing Ride Canceled - All standing paratransit rides will be canceled on Monday, September 5. Paratransit passengers must schedule casual rides to travel on this date. Rides are eligible according to Holiday schedules.

• Streets Division Updates

  • Curbside brush collection is winding down for 2022. Before you put brush out for pickup, check to see when the next collection will be for your home. The brush schedule can be found here.

• Taste of Madison returns to the Capitol Square, 2pm-8pm Saturday, Sept. 3 and 11am-7pm Sunday, Sept. 4. The event will not impact the Dane County Farmer's Market, but will include several road closures as well as equipment storage over the course of the weekend.
