We are pleased to announce that City of Madison is being recognized with an international award on September 21st by the United Nations-affiliated Together for Safer Roads, the leading global NGO focused on Vision Zero and eliminating the 1.5 million traffic deaths around the world annually. Sadly, that translates to well over 10 million people a year suddenly losing a loved one on the road- not including those with paralysis, brain damage, limbs removed, and many other injuries. For those who follow the principles of Vision Zero, we know that every single one of these collisions can be prevented with better design, engineering, enforcement, technology, and education.

It will be one of the greatest honors of my career to accept the Lenin Fierro Vision Zero Fleet Advocacy Award at the TSR Annual Meeting on September 21 in New York City. I will be accepting on behalf of the City of Madison and Madison’s outstanding Vision Zero program launched by Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway in 2020, with official recognition granted by the Vision Zero Network in 2022. The other award recipient is none other than New York City Mayor Eric Adams for his commitment to continued support for the NYC Vision Zero plan, which I also helped launch in 2012.

Madison is receiving the second annual award in this category for our impactful, data-driven work on reducing fleet and traffic collisions on Madison’s streets, with a publicly stated target goal of zero fatalities by 2030. We will get there, but the time to act is now. It will take all of us driving safely in Madison and the surrounding area in all seasons, to meet our ambitious and important Vision Zero goal.
