Happy Employee Appreciation Day

This Employee Appreciation Day I took the time to thank our thousands of City of Madison employees who make Madison a wonderful place to live, visit, and explore. I wanted to share my thank you note with you to celebrate the hard work, compassion and commitment I see from them every day. If you have a chance, please thank the people who keep us safe, keep our community welcoming, and help us access and enjoy all that Madison has to offer.   

Good Morning –  

On Employee Appreciation Day, I wanted to send a word of thanks for the work you do to make our community so special. Every day, I am reminded of all the things that bring people to Madison to live, work, and visit, none of which would be possible without the dedicated hard work of City staff to keep our city safe, sustainable, and equitable. 

I have had the pleasure of giving out each of the #TeamCity awards for the last year and have read the stories of your hard work and achievements that made a difference in so many lives. I also frequently hear from Department and Division Heads sharing their pride in your exemplary customer service and commitment to our shared City values.  

At recent #TeamCity ceremonies, I heard a story about a parent and child who were rescued by folks in our Traffic Engineering Division; I heard a story of relatively new staff in our Civil Rights Department who committed to finding solutions and advocating for people with disabilities; I heard a story about a long

 term employee who committed her entire career in the Fire Department and to educate the public on saving lives; I heard a story about one of our Arborists who goes out of his way to educate the public and promote a more thriving urban canopy.   

These stories are not unusual in the public sector. Rather, every day provides new stories with common threads of people whose lives are made better by public servants willing to dedicate themselves and their work to a larger purpose. Thank you for being one of those people.
