Mayor Names George Meyer to Board of Water Commissioners

Madison – Mayor Dave Cieslewicz announced today that he is nominating leading environmentalist George Meyer to the Madison Board of Water Commissioners. Meyer, the former Secretary of the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), is one of the state’s leading environmentalists and helped craft major improvements in Wisconsin’s groundwater protection law in 2001. “I am very pleased that someone of George Meyer’s experience and reputation has agreed to help address the water-related challenges and opportunities we are facing,” said Cieslewicz. “His unique combination of extensive management experience, vast expertise on groundwater issues, and statewide reputation for environmental leadership will be of great benefit to the Board, the Water Utility, and the community. George will significantly enhance and strengthen the Board’s oversight and policy advising role.” “I look forward to making a contribution to the efforts of what is already a very talented and experienced Board,” said George Meyer. “I hope that my experience with public water issues, managing large organizations, and community outreach will be an asset to the Board and the community.” “George Meyer is an excellent choice for the Board of Water Commissioners,” said Water Utility General Manager David Denig-Chakroff. “His experience in the issues we deal with will be a great asset to the Utility, and I look forward to working with him.” “We are honored to have someone of George Meyer’s experience and knowledge on the Board,” said Board Chair Priscilla Mather. “I have tremendous respect for him.” Board Member Jon Standridge added, “I am delighted that George has agreed to serve on the Board. He has strong skills as a manager of people, finances and bureaucracies. He’ll bring what’s needed to the Board.” Meyer is a longtime Madison resident who served as the Secretary of the DNR from 1993 to 2001. He currently works as the Executive Director of the Wisconsin Wildlife Federation. Meyer’s appointment is subject to confirmation by the Madison Common Council. Meyer fills the vacancy left by outgoing member Larry Studesville.
