Economic Development Expert Tapped to Lead Office of Business Resources

Madison - Mayor Dave Cieslewicz today praised the selection of Matt Mikolajewski as Director of the City of Madison's Office of Business Resources. In his new position, Mikolajewski will play a key role in advancing Madison's economic development efforts. "Matt is a very strong addition to Madison's economic development team," said Mayor Cieslewicz. "He has a strong professional and academic background, and will contribute greatly to city government's work to move our economy forward as part of the newly-restructured Department of Planning and Community and Economic Development." For the past three years, Mikolajewski has run the Wauwatosa Economic Development Corporation, a non-profit economic development corporation serving the community of Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. His work there included securing financial assistance for local businesses, business recruitment and retention, business planning assistance, support in obtaining municipal permits and more. Mikolajewski was selected by Mark Olinger, Director of the Department of Planning and Community and Economic Development. "We were very impressed with the skills and professionalism Matt has shown in his work in Wauwatosa, and his understanding of the role of the Office of Business Resources in the continuing growth and vitality of Madison's business development efforts," said Olinger. Mikolajewski also has a strong academic background with a Master of Urban Planning degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and experience teaching urban planning at that same institution as an Adjunct Professor. He is a native of West Allis and earned his undergraduate degree at UW-Madison. "Through the 'Healthy City' model, recent neighborhood redevelopment planning efforts, and departmental reorganization to elevate the role that the City plays in business development, Mayor Cieslewicz and the Common Council have demonstrated their commitment to fostering economic development within the community," said Mikolajewski. "Madison has the necessary ingredients to cultivate a prosperous economic future. I am excited about the opportunity to play a role in what will likely be a thriving period in the history of our State's Capital." Mikolajewski takes up his position on May 21.
