New Bridge Improves Pedestrian and Bike Connections for Madison's East Side

MADISON ... Federal, state and local elected officials were joined today by neighborhood leaders to mark the opening of the new East Washington Bicycle and Pedestrian Bridge. The bridge provides an easy and safe overpass for bicyclists and pedestrians to cross the busy East Washington Avenue corridor at Starkweather Creek. "This bridge provides an important new link for Madison's east and north side neighborhoods," said Mayor Dave Cieslewicz. "It is a major enhancement of our already-outstanding pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure, and helps advance our goal to be one of the most bicycle-friendly communities in the nation." "When federal, state, and local governments work in partnership on projects such as this everyone benefits. This bridge will help boost economic development, improve the quality of life in this part of the city, and, above all, save lives," said Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin who secured federal funds for the project. "The Wisconsin DOT is proud to partner with communities like Madison to help complete transportation improvements like the Starkweather Creek Bridge that enhance public safety and our overall quality of life," said Wisconsin Department of Transportation Secretary Frank Busalacchi. The $2.6 million bridge is part of the multi-year, $81 million initiative to rebuild and enhance the East Washington Avenue corridor, one of Madison's most important gateway areas. The bridge design is similar to the award-winning East Washington Avenue bridge over the Yahara River, including Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired features such as crème and turquoise "grassroots" coloring, and detailing on the bridge supports which resemble stalks of wheat.
