Play Madison Parks - Making Snow and Making a Difference
This week Madison Parks will be assisting Mother Nature - making snow! Parks staff will be making snow to keep the sledding hill at Elver Park fun and snow-covered for families to enjoy the weekend sledding. This incredible opportunity is thanks to a grant given in 2008 by the Madison Community Foundation with additional funding from the Madison Nordic Ski Club and the Madison Parks Matching Fund Program. This grant allowed the Parks Staff to purchase 2 snow-making cannons and a groomer to provide snow on the hill. Outdoor play is critical to a healthy community, and in order to help facilitate that, Madison Parks is partnering with Community Action Coalition of South Central Wisconsin, Inc. (CAC) for an Outdoor Winter Clothes Drive December 27th - January 9th. Winter coats, jackets, snow-pants, boots and gloves may be dropped off during operation hours at Madison Parks Winter Concession facilities: Elver Park, 1250 McKenna Blvd.; Tenney Park, 1330 Sherman Ave; Vilas Park, 1339 Vilas Park Drive; and Warner Park Community Recreation Center, 1625 Northport Dr. CAC coordinates the annual Koats for Kids drive in partnership with Klinke's Cleaners and Channel 3, which benefits thousands of households. However, as the winter wears on, the need for warm winter clothing continues, especially snow pants and boots for children. Madison Parks kicked off this Outdoor Winter Clothes Drive on December 27 and so far the response from the community has been outstanding. The barrels at the Madison Parks winter facilities are filling up! There is still time - take your family out sledding or ice skating this weekend at Elver Park and donate your gently-used outdoor winter clothes.
