Dog Rescued From Icy Water
The Madison Fire Department Lake Rescue Team rescued a dog that fell through the ice on Lake Mendota just before noon today. Rescuers were called to the area near Picnic Point after the dog ran onto the ice while walking with its owner. Team members drove an amphibious ATV onto the ice and found the dog in the water, unable to pull itself out. The dog was carried back to shore by one of the divers and reunited with its owner. While working on the ice, rescue divers wore cold water rescue suits that provide flotation and protection from the frigid water. A UW Police Officer transported the dog to the UW Veterinary Hospital for evaluation. This serves as a reminder that ice thickness and conditions can be unpredictable. People venturing onto the ice should be properly dressed and equipped in case they fall through the ice.
