First Quarter MPD Data Released

The number of reported crimes dropped during the first quarter of 2011. Data could still fluctuate as cases are investigated, or new reports come in, but for now the number of person crimes recorded for the first 3 months of 2011 stands at 488. That compares with 595 for the first quarter of 2010. First quarter property crimes also dipped: 2259 in 2011, 2606 in 2010. Madison Police Chief Noble Wray says citizens should not to read too much into short-term numbers, indicating it is best to analyze trends over larger segments of time. First quarter numbers, comparing 2010 to 2011, are as follows: Person Crimes: Assault: 2011=440 2010=548 Homicide: 2011=0 2010=1 Sex Offenses -Forcible: 2011=47 2010=45 Sex Offenses- Non-Forcible: 2011=1 2010=1 Total Person Crimes: 2011=488 2010=595 Property Crimes: Burglary: 2011=231 2010=384 Damage to Property: 2011=428 2010=476 Fraud: 2011=232 2010=230 Motor Vehicle Theft: 2011=62 2010=86 Robbery: 2011=61 2010=78 Theft: 2011=1245 2010=1352 Total Property Crimes: 2011=2259 2010=2606 Society Crimes: Drug/Narcotic: 2011=329 2010=326 Weapon Violations: 2011=38 2010=46 Total Society Crimes: 2011=367 2010=372 Grand Total: 2011=3114 2010=3573 Reducing crime, and making Madison the safest city possible, is a collaborative effort, and the MPD is proud of its relationship with many community partners.
