Family Escapes Overnight Kitchen Fire

A family of four escaped injury after a fire started in the kitchen of their home on the City's near west side. City of Madison firefighters responded to 730 Baltzell St. at 11:15 Sunday night. Upon arrival, crews noted smoke coming from the home. The occupants had already evacuated after being awakened by a smoke alarm. Engine Company 4 saw a glow from the rear of the 2-story house. Firefighters entered through the front and found fire in the kitchen at the rear of the home. Crews extinguished the fire within minutes of arrival. There was some fire damage in the kitchen, and smoke throughout the home. Damages are estimated at $30,000. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
