Scammers pose as utility employees

Dozens of people in Madison have received suspicious phone calls from someone claiming to be with a local utility. In some cases, the caller or callers demand hundreds of dollars for a water meter repair or upgrade. Madison Water Utility is in the process of upgrading water meters across the city as part of our Project H2O advanced metering infrastructure system. However, the standard Project H2O meter upgrade is free. We will never demand that a customer wire money to us or reveal bank or credit card account information over the phone. All employees who visit homes to install the new system wear Madison Water Utility-issued photo IDs. If you are contacted by someone who you believe may be posing as a utility employee, please report the incident to the Madison Police Department.
