Smoky Fire Causes Evacuation of Chamberlin Hall
A very smoky fire caused minor damage and the evacuation of Chamberlin Hall on the UW Madison campus this afternoon. A full structure fire response from the Madison Fire Department was sent to 1150 University Avenue at 1:18 p.m.
The initial report indicated a fire in a small mechanical space containing high voltage electrical equipment. Responding units were given an update advising that the fire appeared to be out based on images from a security camera in the space.
When firefighters arrived, occupants were evacuating the building. Due to the large amount of smoke and the size of the building, a second alarm was called to the scene. Firefighters had a difficult time getting to the cramped space where the fire occurred.
The fire was extinguished with a dry chemical extinguisher and damages are estimated at $1,000. Firefighters ventilated a large amount of smoke from the building before allowing people to re-enter the building.
No injuries were reported at the fire scene.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
