posted

City of Madison firefighters made quick work of an apartment fire this afternoon on the city’s east side. Crews were dispatched to the 5000 block of Camden Road at 1:46 p.m. after a neighbor in the building saw smoke coming from a first floor apartment of the 2-story, 4-unit structure.

When firefighters arrived just minutes later, heavy black smoke was coming from the front window of the apartment. Crews immediately pulled a hose line, knocking down the fire at 1:55 p.m., and containing it to the room of origin. There was smoke and heat damage to the front room of the apartment, but the three other apartments in the building were undamaged.

Occupants of the apartment were not home when the fire started.

Investigators are on scene, working to determine the exact cause of the fire. Initial damages are estimated at $35,000.
