City Sewer Interceptor Overflows due to Heavy Rain Event on September 4, 2014

posted

The City of Madison reports a discharge of untreated wastewater from a sanitary sewer interceptor located within an easement on the Far West Side, between Mid Town Road and Valley View Road. The discharge was discovered late Thursday, September 4, and was attributable to the heavy rain event earlier in the day.  A casting near Valley View Road had been dislodged by farming activity, allowing stormwater into the sewer system.  Two downstream structures then became pressurized allowing a release of some of the stormwater, possibly mixed with sewerage.  The problem was corrected early Friday as the flooding receded.

Any sewerage discharged would have been highly diluted by the stormwater.  Additionally much of the upstream sewer interceptor is presently inactive, awaiting future development.
This notice is provided in compliance with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Administrative Code and the City of Madison’s Capacity, Maintenance, Operations & Management (CMOM) Program. For more information contact Mike Dailey, Assistant City Engineer, at (608) 266-4058.
