Fire In Apartment Force Two People To Jump from Second Story Balcony

One Person Transported to UW Hospital
A fire forced two people to jump from a second story balcony, along with a two year old that was dropped into the waiting arms of a resident on the ground level. One person suffered non-life threatening injuries after jumping from the balcony and was transported to UW Hospital.
The fire started just before 9 a.m. at 5718 Balsam Road, a 4-unit apartment complex. Within four minutes, firefighters arrived and noticed grey smoke coming from the soffits. Firefighters made entry to the first floor apartment and found fire rolling across the ceiling. The fire was located in the kitchen area and was quickly extinguished. After a thorough search and rescue, crews found that everyone was out of the building. At the time of the fire, two apartments were occupied with 5 adults and 3 young children.
Property and content damage is estimated at $80,000. The fire caused major damage to the fire apartment and smoke damage throughout the building.
The fire displaced a total of 5 adults and 6 children, ranging from 2 months to 16 years old. Red Cross is assisting the families with emergency housing, food and clothing.
Good Shepherd Lutheran Church located at 5701 Raymond Road and is next door to the fire apartment, opened their doors to the families and offered food and warmth.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
