Fire on Madison's Southeast Side Displaces 7

posted

A fire started early Friday morning on Madison’s Southeast Side.  Fire crews were called to the duplex at 5126 Great Gray Dr shortly before 2:00am this morning for a report of a stove on fire.

The first on scene unit reported smoke showing from multiple sides of the home.  Engine 5 made a rapid entry to the multi-level home and found smoke banked down to the floor inside the front door.  Despite no visibility, the firefighters used the Thermal Imaging Camera (TIC) to find the seat of the fire and quickly extinguish it.

Fire damage was limited to the kitchen and dining area, with heat and smoke damage throughout the unit.  One occupant was home at the time, with other family members out of town.  The occupant was able to evacuate the home safely.  All seven family members are accounted for, safe, and are staying with relatives.

Damages to the home are likely to exceed $50,000 per MFD investigators.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
