Public hearing scheduled for Madison Water Utility rate case

posted

A public hearing on Madison Water Utility’s rate application will be held on September 2 at 10:00 a.m. at the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin, 610 North Whitney Way. The utility is seeking an overall increase in water revenues across its five customer classes (residential, multi-family, industrial, commercial and public authority) of 30.69 percent. The increase is needed because of rising operation and maintenance expenses and significant annual investments in water infrastructure since the last water rate increase in May of 2011.

Residential Customers

Under the new plan, the water bill for an average residential customer will increase from $17.24 per month to $19.51, or 13 percent.

Residential usage charges would transition to a conservation rate, which means they will vary depending on the amount of water used. Currently, residential customers pay $2.81 per 1,000 gallons regardless of how much water is used. Under the new plan, the following rate tiers would be in place for residential customers (people living in single-family homes and duplexes):

Usage per billing month                             Cost per 1,000 gallons

First 3,000 Gallons / Month                           $2.84
Next 3,000 Gallons / Month                           $3.26
Next 3,000 Gallons / Month                           $3.60
Next 5,000 Gallons / Month                           $4.50
Over 14,000 Gallons / Month                         $5.07
