Statement of Madison Mayor Paul Soglin on the Death of Ed Garvey

Ed’s death is a great loss for all of us. His impact as the driving force behind Fighting Bob Fest, laying the groundwork that allowed Bernie Sanders’ campaign to take hold, and providing personal advice and inspiration is a lasting legacy.
In recent years, I sorely missed the lunches with Ed and John Matthews as we plotted against countless governments and imagined the day of a truly fair and just society. We can only dream of what might have been, had Ed been elected governor of Wisconsin. Ed would tell us to stop dreaming and get to work. We will return to work but only after reflecting on Ed’s sharp tongue, brilliant mind, dry sense of humor, and overwhelming humanity.
I thank Betty and Ed’s family for sharing him with us.
