City of Madison Flooding Update - Monday, September 3

Madison residents are asked to continue to be prepared for rising water levels. The water level on Lake Monona has reached a new record high after going up an inch overnight. It is currently at 7 ½ inches above the 100-year flood elevation, which is 848.34 (feet above median sea level).
Rain is expected this afternoon and 2” of rain is possible. With water already high on the east isthmus and rain predicted this afternoon and evening, the potential for urban flash flooding increases. Expect water levels on the streets to rise during moderate to intense rain events. Property damage from flash flooding, including buildings and vehicles, is a significant risk. Properties that are located within low lying areas of the east isthmus must prepare for this potential. See website for properties most at risk.
We expect an increase in the discharge rate at the Tenney Dam either late today or sometime tomorrow morning, the timing of the increase is dependent on the amount of rain and the timing of the rain. The discharge rate increase will cause another incremental raise to the water levels on the streets that drain to the Yahara River such as East Washington Ave, Livingston Street and the Tenney Park area. The impact on school and commuter traffic tomorrow morning is not currently known. Residents are encouraged to watch the weather and allow extra time to travel to school and work. Watch the weather and visit our website for the latest conditions.
Staff are continuing to monitor roads and water levels and closure decisions will be made as needed.

East Johnson Street is closed in both directions between North Baldwin Street and Fordem Avenue. View closure on map .

East Washington Avenue has one lane closed in each direction. Two lanes remain open in each direction. The right lane is closed on inbound East Washington Avenue at North Livingston Street. The right lane is closed on outbound East Washington Avenue at South Blount Street.

North First Street has one lane open in each direction.
