West Area Plan Moves Forward, Seeks Further Insights from the Community

posted

The City of Madison is excited to move forward to the next phase of the West Area Plan , and staff needs your help in the planning process. The City invites residents, community organizations, businesses, and other stakeholders to attend upcoming meetings and share insights, concerns, and other feedback.

So far, Planning staff have received over 800 comments via surveys and interactive mapping, and many more were shared during meetings earlier this year. The next meeting(s) is an opportunity to learn what the
City has heard so far, and to review and provide feedback for initial plan recommendations.

Staff will provide an overview of issues and opportunities in the planning area, as well as draft plan recommendations, with a focus on land use and bicycle/pedestrian networks.  Presentations at the virtual meetings will be followed by discussion and feedback; the in-person meeting at Rennebohm will be an open house format.

The West Area Plan generally covers the area bounded by the City of Middleton and Lake Mendota to the north, Midvale Boulevard on the East, and the West Beltline Highway on the south and west.

About the City’s new Framework Area Plans:
The City has established a Planning Framework to simplify the City’s sub-area planning and make it more equitable. Over the next decade, 12 Framework Area Plans will be developed to cover the entire city and future growth areas. These plans will address a consistent set of topics and include higher level recommendations. With 70 sub-area plans adopted over the last four decades, each Framework Area Plan process provides an opportunity to consider older sub-area plans for retirement to reduce the number of outdated and overlapping plans. After the 12 Plans are established, they will be updated each decade to reflect an ever-changing city and keep Plan recommendations in synch with other City initiatives.
