Luna’s Groceries to Open Second Location in South Madison

posted

The Community Development Authority of the City of Madison (CDA), working closely with the City’s Economic Development Division (EDD) is pleased to announce that it has executed a lease with Luna’s Groceries to open a store in the former Yue‐Wah grocery space at the Village on Park mall in South Madison (2328 S Park St). Luna’s Groceries is a prominent food retailer in the Allied‐Dunn’s Marsh Neighborhood, filling a vital food access gap and becoming a healthy food retailer and community resource hub for neighborhood residents. Owner Mariam Maldonado hopes to bring that same ethos of high‐quality food products and community service to South Madison.

When we opened Luna’s Groceries in Allied Drive in 2019, it was always my desire and intention to bring healthy food and accessible food to residents of the neighborhood. Our current store embodies our motto of ‘bringing food to the hungry walker’ and we are committed to doing the same thing in South Madison by offering diverse and healthy food options to residents and visitors to the neighborhood.
Mariam Maldonado ‐ Owner, Luna’s Groceries

The City of Madison was the catalyzing funder for Luna’s Groceries in Allied‐Dunn’s Marsh back in 2018, and we can see the impact of that investment on the neighborhood today. I am happy to welcome Luna’s Groceries to the Village on Park so they can continue their legacy of neighborhood commitment and service. This is part of the City’s investment in South Madison, in healthy food access, and in supporting underrepresented business owners.
Mayor Satya Rhodes‐Conway

Before Luna’s can open its new store at the Village on Park, the CDA needs to renovate the current store space. The grocery renovations are expected to be completed in late spring of 2024, with Luna’s making their tenant improvements afterwards. The CDA’s adjacent new parking garage is estimated to be completed in the spring of 2025 and is being built as part of the redevelopment of the property to support the tenants of the Village on Park, the Hub, the Goodman Library, and the Urban League of Greater Madison.

South Madison is redeveloping, with financing provided by the City of Madison to ensure that this redevelopment is equitable and is a boat that lifts all tides for members of our community. Special attention is being paid to matters of equity and inclusion during this process and BIPOC business owners, who have historically been left behind in the wake of neighborhood redevelopment, are poised to have real opportunities for growth and economic mobility. This renovation and securing Luna’s Groceries for the space is a prime example of that intentionality at work.
