SAYING GOODBYE TO THE AUCTIONEER

MPD Property Unit Announces Major Departure

At the Madison Police Department (MPD), the auctioneer has just gone the way of the gandy dancer. For years, popular fall and/or spring auctions brought many out to bid on abandoned or unclaimed property. No more. The MPD's Property Unit staff are proud to announce that all future auction activity will be conducted on-line though the department's website. As of today, October 1, 2009, the MPD has contracted with www.propertyroom.com to provide the auction service. Company employees will provide periodic pickup of abandoned and unclaimed property - that has met legal requirements for disposal. They will clean items - if necessary - and post them at the site listed above for auction. The new service is welcome news at the MPD on a couple of fronts: there was becoming an ever increasing need for space to hold items until "live" auctions occurred, while the amount of staff time needed for dealing with auction items - then preparing them for bid - was considerable. The MPD sees this new service as a way to: greatly improve the efficient handling of property; reduce the need for additional storage space, and provide staff more time to focus on other concerns.
