20 New Recruits Chosen for Upcoming Academy

Twenty individuals have been selected, approved by the Police and Fire Commission, and notified for the City of Madison Fire Department's Recruit Academy that begins on October 19, 2009. Group 30 will attend a 20-week academy to prepare for their careers as City of Madison Firefighters. They are: Kyle Annen, currently employed part-time at Tellurian UCAN Inc., as a part-time Human Services Associate since June 2008. Annen also works for his father's business, Annen's Lawn Care Service of Madison. Annen's is also an umpire coordinator for West Madison Little League. Annen has completed 33 credits at UW-Whitewater. He has also taken fire/EMS classes which include: Fire Safety, basic first aid, and suicide prevention & intervention. Derek Brown, currently working full-time at his family's business, Brown's Service Wisconsin Golf in Walworth, WI. He is also a volunteer firefighter with Walworth Fire Department, and an EMT-IV with the Walworth Rescue Squad. Brown was also an intern firefighter with the Maple Bluff Fire Department in Maple Bluff, WI while attending MATC - Madison. Brown received his Associate's Degree in Fire Protection from MATC - Madison in May 2009 and attended several other fire/EMS related trainings which include: State Certified Firefighter I & II, Driver/Operator - Pumper Fire Inspector I, and WI EMT-IV. Troy Donkle, currently self-employed as a contractor/builder under T. Donkle Construction, LLC. Donkle graduated in 1990 from UW-Madison with a Bachelor's Degree in Economics and attended MATC - Madison, obtaining a certificate in Residential Home Inspection. Donkle also has a Dwelling Contractor certification from the State of Wisconsin. David Guthrie, currently employed as a part-time Firefighter for the New Berlin Fire Department in New Berlin, WI. He is also employed as an EMT-B with Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare in Racine, WI. Guthrie is currently attending MATC - Milwaukee and taking the Fire Science program with a projected graduation date of December 2009. He also completed his paramedic training at Gateway Technical College in Kenosha in May of 2008. Guthrie has attended several fire/EMS trainings which include: EMT-P, National Registry of EMT-Ps., WI Firefighter I & II, WI Driver/Operator - Pumper, WI Fire Officer I. Amanda Hornung, currently employed by the Rock County Sheriff's Office in Janesville, WI. Hornung was promoted to her current rank of Sergeant in July 2008. Hornung holds an Associate's Degree from Blackhawk Technical College with a major in Supervisory Management. She also obtained a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration from Franklin University, Columbus OH. She has attended several fire/EMS related classes which include: WI Firefighter I & II, EMT - Basic, National Registered EMT - Basic, Dive Rescue, Ice Diving Ops and a PADI Open Water SCUBA Diver. James Kidd, currently employed part-time at FedEx as a package sorter/handler/loader. Kidd earned his Associate's Degree from MATC-Madison in 2007 in Architectural Technology. Kristopher Kiley, currently a Firefighter Intern with the City of Fitchburg Fire Department. He is in his 2nd year at MATC-Madison, enrolled in the Fire Protection Technician Program. He has attended several Fire/EMS-related courses, which include: WI Firefighter I & II. Ryan Kinkade, currently a firefighter intern with the City of Fitchburg Fire Department. He is in his 2nd year at MATC-Madison, enrolled in the Fire Protection Technician Program. He has attended several Fire/EMS-related courses, which include: WI Firefighter I & II, WI EMT-Basic, and PADI SCUBA certified Scuba Diver. Scott Lardinois, currently employed part-time at Curb Impressions in Sobieski, WI as a laborer. He is also a Firefighter for the Seymour Fire Department. Lardinois received his Associate's Degree in 2009 from Fox Valley Technical College in the Fire Protection Technician program, and a Bachelor's degree in History from the University of Wisconsin - Green Bay in 2005. Lardinois has attended several Fire/EMS courses which include: Firefighter I & II, Driver/Operator - Pumper, WI EMT Basic. He earned his Eagle Scout medal (Boy Scouts of America) in Nov. 1999. Lardinois enlisted in the United States Army Reserve and is obligated until Dec. 2011. Lardinois served in a designated imminent danger area - Iraq Sept. 2006 to Sept. 2007. Christopher Lugo, currently employed as a Police Officer for the Marco Island Police Department in Marco Island, FL. Prior to Marco Island Police Department, Lugo was employed as a Police Officer and member of SWAT for the City of Milwaukee Police Department, Milwaukee, WI. Lugo received an Associate's Degree from the Fashion Institute of Technology, New York, NY in May 1992. He also has attended the University of Buffalo-NY and Mount Scenario College. Lugo enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and received an Honorable Discharge June 1994 after serving a six (6) year obligation. Robert Luling, currently employed by the City of Madison Fire Department as a Code Enforcement Officer I, assigned to the Fire Prevention Division since April 2007. Luling is also a volunteer Firefighter with the Sun Prairie Fire Department. Luling has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from University of WI - Platteville. Luling has attended several fire-related programs, which include: State of WI Firefighter I & II, Fire Inspector I and also has a certification from the International Code Council, Fire Inspector I and II. Matthew Murray, currently employed as a firefighter with the Schiller Park Fire Department in Schiller Park IL. Murray is also employed as an EMT-P with Rescue 8 of Arlington Heights IL. Murray graduated from UW-Madison in 2001 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications/PR. He also graduated from the Malcolm X College - Paramedic Program in the summer of 2005. He has attended several Fire/EMS-related programs which include: WI Firefighter I & II, IL Firefighter II, several IL Technical Rescue Programs from the Illinois State Fire Marshal's Office. He also has his National Registry of EMT-P certification and IL EMT-P license. Lionel Norton, currently unemployed after being laid off from General Motors in Janesville, WI. Norton was employed from September 1996 - January 2009 holding several positions ranging from: Quality Engineer, Test Systems Coordinator, MCE 2003 Launch Team Electrical Coordinator, Quality Control Supervisor, Process Control Manger, then concluding as a Quality Audit Manager. Norton was a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army and served four (4) years of active duty before receiving an Honorable Discharge. Norton received his Bachelor of Science degree in Electronic Engineering Technology and was has obtained 52 credits towards his Master's Degree in Manufacturing Management. Daniel Pazurek, currently employed as a custodian/maintenance worker at Faith Community School and Church in Fort Atkinson, WI. He is also currently a volunteer Firefighter with Fort Atkinson Fire Department. Pazurek was a teacher at Kohler High School, Kohler, WI before deciding on a career change in 2008. Pazurek received a Bachelor of Science degree in math from Northwestern College in St. Paul, MN. He also attended Blackhawk Technical College and obtained his State of WI Firefighter I and his Driver/Operator - Pumper certifications. He has also obtained fire related certificates from FEMA. Chad Powell, currently employed as an EMT-B with Pro-Ambulance, Urbana, IL, and an Emergency Room Technician at Provena Covenant Medical Center in Urbana, IL. Powell is currently attending the paramedic program in Parkland College in Champaign, IL, where he has obtained 37 semester hours. Powell has attended several Fire/EMS related courses which include: EMT-Basic, WI Firefighter I & II as well as several other Fire related courses sponsored by the Illinois State Fire Marshal's Office. David Schrimpf, currently employed as U.S. Forest Service Wildland Firefighter. Schrimpf was employed by Viking Electrical Supply from October 2007 - May 2008 and from August 2008 through 2009. He was laid off from Viking due to the poor economy and took the opportunity to continue his education during this time. Schrimpf graduated from Lake Superior College with an Associate's Degree in Fire Technology and Administration in May 2009. He has also attended other Fire/EMS related courses, which include: National Certified Firefighter I, NFPA Haz Mat 472, several wildland firefighter courses and is a MN EMT-B. Richard Scott Jr., currently employed full-time as a Captionist for Captel Inc. Scott has earned 43 credits from UW-La Crosse. He also attended MATC-Madison and UW-Madison, gaining an additional 29 credits. Stephen Terry, currently unemployed. Terry was a Sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps and was deployed to Iraq on two (2) different occasions, most recently September 2007 - August 2008. Terry worked part-time at State Street Brats as a bartender and an acting manager while attending school. Terry obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in Legal Studies from UW-Madison in December of 2006. Jason Wiese, currently employed as a New York City Firefighter assigned to Eng. Co. 45 in the Bronx. Wiese graduated from MATC-Madison with an Associate's Degree in Fire Protection in 2001 and has attended several Fire/EMS courses, including: Firefighter I & II, WI Driver Operator - Pumper and WI EMT-B. Wiese also attended school while in the NY area. Wiese enlisted in the United States Marine Corps from July 1994 until his Honorable Discharge in 1999. Wiese was a Sergeant at the time of separation. Aaron Zamzow, currently employed at Horizon Health & Fitness Center in Middleton, WI as a fitness coordinator and is also the owner of Zamzow Fitness, LLC. He was a member of the Golden Valley Fire Department in Golden Valley MN where he was a Firefighter from January 2005 to January 2009. Zamzow attended the University of Minnesota - St. Paul where he obtained 152 credits and is currently enrolled at Kaplan University (online program) to complete his Bachelor's Degree in Health & Wellness. Zamzow has attended several Fire/EMS related courses which include: MN Firefighter I & II, MN Apparatus Operator 3, WI Firefighter I & II, WI Driver / Operator - Pumper, WI EMT-Basic, and MN EMT-Basic.
