December 5 - Madison Parks StayCation
Now that the turkey is done, and before the snow storms blow in, you and your family can enjoy some unique Madison Parks fun. Madison Parks is proud to be hosting three unique events on Saturday, December 5. First, head to Warner Park for your Holiday shopping at the HolidayFest Arts and Craft show. While you are shopping, your family can enjoy an antique model train and toy exhibit called the "Gandy Dancer Jamboree" at the Warner Park Community Recreation Center. After the craft show, bring your family to Veterans Memorial Park for a dedication of Madison Parks only Veteran's Memorial. Mayor Dave Cieslewicz will be on hand to dedicate this memorial and honor our local veterans past, present and future. After the dedication, bring your family to Olbrich's Holiday Express - a large-scale model trains wind through festive gingerbread houses and hundreds of colorful poinsettias! Event details: HolidayFest Arts and Craft Show at Warner Park Community Recreation Center 1625 Northport Drive, Madison | 608.245.3690 December 5, 2009 | 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. The Warner Park Community Recreation Center, 1625 Northport Drive, will be hosting its Annual HolidayFest Arts & Craft Show on December 5 from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. Over 100 crafters from around the area will be selling their wares. There will be holiday crafts, country crafts, wood crafts, wreaths, baskets, jewelry and much, much more. • Admission is $1. • Food and beverages will be available. • Door Prizes! Entertainment! • Plenty of free parking. New in 2009 - an antique model train and toy show. The "Gandy Dancer Jamboree" will be located in the lobby. The free, hands-on exhibit is sponsored by the S Gauge Wisconsin, Inc. a model railroad club. Gandy Dancer Jamboree at Warner Park Community Recreation Center December 5 - 13 The Gandy Dancer Jamboree is a unique exhibit of operating model trains and other toys from yesteryear. A Gandy Dancer is a term used to describe railroad workers in the 1800's. The workers used tools made by the Gandy Tool Company of Chicago. Illinois. The antique model train and toy exhibit will be held from December 5 through December 13 in the lobby of the Warner Park Community Recreation Center, 1625 Northport Drive. The exhibit is sponsored by, and run by S. Gauge Wisconsin, Inc. a model railroad club. The exhibit is FREE to the public and everyone is invited to actually play with and operate the model trains as time and "Gandy Dancers" allow. Donations accepted. S Gauge Wisconsin, Inc. dedicates this event to the thousands, even millions, of Gandy Dancers who built and maintained America's railroad systems. Gandy Dancers exist and function to this day although much of their former manual labor is now mechanized. Veteran's Memorial Dedication On December 5, at 1p.m., Mayor Dave Cieslewicz, various representatives of state-wide veterans organizations, the Madison Parks Division will raise the flags and dedicate a newly constructed Veterans Memorial in Veterans Memorial Park, 4601 Star Spangled Trl. VFW Post 7591 Veterans of Foreign War raised $123,000 to construct this memorial that will honor past, present and future service of our local veterans. The December 5th date was chosen as a dedication date by the VFW Council in order to not only dedicate this memorial, but also to commemorate December 7, the 68th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. Ewald Koch a local veteran from the VFW post who was wounded in the attack and received a purple heart will also be in attendance.
