Smoke Alarms Warn Residents of Fire
Two residents of 3818 Ice Age Drive escaped from an early morning house fire thanks to the smoke alarms in their home. City of Madison firefighters were sent to the fire at 3:45 AM and arrived within seven minutes. The first unit on the scene reported smoke and flames visible near the soffit area on the rear wall of the house. Several firefighters entered the home to attack the fire that was located on the second floor and in the attic. The fire was controlled within twenty minutes, but crews remained on the scene for another two hours locating and extinguishing smoldering fire in the home. Firefighters used tarps to cover furniture and personal belongings to protect them from water damage. Despite the firefighter's efforts, damage to the house and its contents is estimated to be $150,000. The cause of this fire is under investigation. The City of Madison Fire Department reminds everyone of these safety tips: • Install smoke alarms on every level of the home and in each sleeping area. Interconnected smoke alarms will make sure the alarm is heard throughout the home. • Test your smoke alarms every month. • Have a home escape plan and practice it twice a year. • When the alarm sounds, get out and stay out. • After you have escaped, call 9-1-1 from a safe place. • Never go back inside the building for any reason. • Please visit www.madisonfire.org for more safety information.
